چکیده

The paper explores schemes for dynamic replication and migration of web objects in the context of an Internet hosting service. It describes a replica placement algorithm for deciding the location and number of replicas of an object as well as request distribution schemes for choosing among currently available replicas. We compare two classes of request distribution algorithms – namely feedback and non-feedback based. Further, we compare dynamic replication to a static replication scheme. We have simulated the algorithms using synthetic workloads as well as a real trace from a hosting service. Measurement and analysis show that dynamic replication significantly reduces bandwidth consumption and latency, removes hot spots from the network and smooths out bursts in bandwidth demand while imposing only a low network traffic overhead. For example, on the trace, our algorithm reduces bandwidth consumption by as much as 52%while imposing a traffic overhead of only about 5%. Results of the simulation also demonstrate that at high loads, the ability to predict the effect of a migration or replication is important for any system that takes dynamic replica placement decisions.

DataSlicer: A Hosting Platform For Data-Centric Network Services

As theWeb evolves, the number of network services deployed on the Internet has been growing at a dramatic pace. Such services usually involve a massive volume of data stored in physical or virtual back-end databases, and access the data to dynamically generate responses for client requests. These characteristics restrict use of traditional mechanisms for improving service performance and scalab...

Dynamic Replication based on Firefly Algorithm in Data Grid

In data grid, using reservation is accepted to provide scheduling and service quality. Users need to have an access to the stored data in geographical environment, which can be solved by using replication, and an action taken to reach certainty. As a result, users are directed toward the nearest version to access information. The most important point is to know in which sites and distributed sy...

Decrepol: A Decentralized Replication Policy for Web Documents

The current size of the Internet makes it impossible to host major Web sites on a single server. Replication can improve both the availability and the performance of a Web hosting service. Current replication policies heavily rely on the origin server. Therefore, this thesis presents Decrepol, a decentralized replication policy for Web documents that assumes the origin server to be unavailable ...

Towards Autonomic Hosting of Multi-tier Internet Applications

Large scale e-commerce enterprises like Yahoo and Amazon use complex software systems made of hundreds of Internet services to serve content to millions of clients. These services are multi-tiered Web applications that perform certain business logic and are exposed through well-defined client interfaces usually accessible over the network. A constant challenge faced by these organizations is to...
